Where do our dogs come from?
//
On September 8, 2018, Apollo, a full-blooded Border Collie's world was turned upside down. His owner had passed away. He was in a shelter and was scheduled to be euthanized the next day. He was covered in filth, and his life was over as he knew it.
Clancy's Dream help dogs from many venues and from various resources throughout the eastern United States. When we first started many years ago with adoptions, it was surrounding a 200-mile radius of central Indiana. Today, we like to think we will help from almost anywhere in the USA.
There is some criteria that we stick to because of our strict insurance policies to cover unforeseen issues and aggression problems, and we are required to follow those guidelines. Once our dogs pass evaluations, we do everything necessary to find each dog the right home. Usually, we have a waiting list of people who are looking for a dog. Even if you're at the top of our adoption list doesn't mean you get the next dog; we look for the right dog for the right home.

This message was sent by a backyard breeder of Border Collies. Clancy's Dream has worked with Border Collie Breeders every year. Some were overwhelmed, some couldn't sell the dogs, and some just quit. In this instance, when Clancy’s Dream arrived, we found a total of 17 dogs. There were 4 puppies, 2 seniors and 11 other dogs of various ages living in pretty horrible conditions. The puppies and seniors were taken immediately and put into foster homes. Board members returned the next day to evaluate each dog. After an action plan was put into place, a team of volunteers arrived on location to clean-up these dogs whose fur was urine stained & matted.
Days later a generous volunteer drove 3 hours with a horse trailer to pick-up the remaining dogs and get them to the Layfayette, IN Spay & Neuter Clinic for dental work, vaccinations & spay/neuter surgery. Sadly all dogs were heartworm positive and each dog had an average of 10 teeth pulled. Many thousands of dollars later and with the assistance of other Border Collie Rescues, these dogs all went to foster homes for rehab & future adoptions.
This turned out to be the biggest rescue in Clancy’s Dream history.
On many occasions, a representative of Clancy’s Dream will try to get an owner to relinquish a dog that is being chained 24/7 and for the most part, we have been successful.
During any given week, we get 20 to 30 calls, tags, messages from people, organizations, shelters, and even Veterinarian offices who need help. Sometimes a person will tag us on social media. They don’t even know the dog but saw a Border Collie in need, hoping we can help.

Once Clancy's Dream gets started, we talk with the owner or shelter where the dog has been relinquished. If it's a private relinquish, we need all background and Veterinarian information about the dog. If the dog passes the evaluation, plans need to be set up to transport the dog to an authorized foster home. All health issues need to be taken care of before the dog goes to their new home.,
"Help, we need a place to take our dog. We both work, and he stays in the crate most of the day. He's a great dog, but he needs more, can you please help us?"
//
Do we take every dog? Unfortunately no, we look for dogs that will fit into our program. While we will take Border Collie mixes too, it needs to look like a border Collie and carry some of the traits, characteristics, and mannerisms.

On many occasions, we respond to a Vets office for help. Dogs with Heartworms, broken legs, Parvo, amputations, torn ACL's are left at the vet’s office when the owners won't or can’t pay for treatment. In each case, we have attempted to "right the wrong," helping with the cost to treat the issues or taking the dog into our rescue.
While there are hundreds of reasons, we will get a dog that has been surrendered to us, it really doesn't matter. We ask no questions except the needed ones and pass no judgment to the person who is relinquishing their dog to us. It's only about the Border Collie and repairing the injury, spirit, mind, and finding a home that will continue our work and love and cherish the dog.
